The local highway patrol say tourists and retirees might be partly to blame.
If the latest study on the worst drivers in the United States is any indication, you might want to steer clear of road trips to Disney World and South Beach for the rest of the summer. As it turns out, Florida is plagued with the worst drivers in the country.
Personal finance company SmartAsset put together this new list of states with the worst drivers by collecting data on auto-related incidents around the country, such as DUI arrests and people killed in car accidents. Through this research, SmartAsset also found that Floridians Google “speeding tickets” and “traffic tickets” more than residents of any other state, and Florida is home to the second highest number of uninsured drivers in the country. Uh-oh.
Florida Highway Patrol officers say that the sheer number of tourists and retirees in Florida might be partly to blame for the state’s No. 1 ranking, Florida news station WFLA reports. “When you put all of this together, obviously we’re going to have some issues, and we’re going to have people vying for the same lot of land trying to get from point A to point B,” Trooper Kenn Watson told WFLA.
The Sunshine State isn’t the only Southern state with bad drivers, however. According to the SmartAsset study, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee all made the top 10 as well.
Take a look at SmartAsset’s list of the top 25 states with the worst drivers below. Just remember that even if your state ranked lower (or didn’t rank at all!) on the list, this new study is an important reminder to keep your eyes on the road and drive carefully.
